We've had a very successful fall semester! Thanks to an incredible exec board we've maintained membership levels over 100. Myself, Monica Earle, the president and Roxie Lute, the vice president, were able to attend the National Conference in D.C. We've had multiple guest speakers, an informative resume workshop and a site visit to Renaissance Creative.

The exec board has awesome plans for the Spring semester. Mark your calendars for our "How to Survive Campaigns" student-panel event. It will be on January 11th at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union Auditorium. Previous campaign class leaders will be there to speak about their experience and give advice.

We are also starting up a newsletter, so expect to see much more frequent posts, here, on the blog as well as an e-newsletter in your e-mails!

February Meeting

Join us Wednesday, February 17 at 4:45 p.m. for our second meeting of the semester. David Clark from the Children's Home Society will be on hand to discuss life in the nonprofit world. Formerly employed by the United Way, Clark has years of experience in the nonprofit sector. If you are even remotely interested in working in the nonprofit field, you do not want to miss this!

First informational meeting of the year!

This Wednesday we will be having our first meeting of the semester. Our guest speaker will be Lauri-Ellen Smith, APR (Accredited in Public Relations) from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Mrs. Smith oversees all communications for JSO and she is considered one of the best practitioners in our field in Jacksonville. Her advice will be very beneficial and she is well connected all over the United States. You wont want to miss this event!

After the meeting she will be offering a free resume review.

As always, food and drinks will be provided.

The meeting will be held in the Student Union 58 (the Boathouse side) in room 3805 at 4:45 p.m.

This event is open to all Communications students, so please bring friends!

You know you're a PR student when...

1. During a trip to Barnes & Noble that was originally intended for pleasure reading, you end up grabbing a new grammar book and the latest copy of the AP Stylebook (and the book you intended to get if you're lucky).
2. Your iphone/blackberry has multiple news and social media applications.

3. You’re a fan of USA Today or other news organizations on Facebook.

4. Your friends make fun of you for having a Twitter account and insist there isn't a point (and you catch yourself defending it with the networking benefits).

5. SPSS, PRSSA and AP all make sense—and PR doesn’t stand for Puerto Rico.

6. Internships and networking events aren’t boring requirements.

7. Friends who work for parking services leave fake tickets on your car that say “Violation: Too much PRSSA”.

8. You find yourself editing your friends’ spelling and grammar mistakes on Facebook via comments or wall posts.

9. Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin have become legitimate procrastination excuses.

10. You get your Gen Ed papers back with comments like “need more detail” or “use more college-level wording next time” and with a big smile you think to yourself—I’m finally getting the hang of this PR writing thing!

While listening to Rihanna's song "Hard", you automatically think she says "where dem bloggers at" while your boyfriend insists she's saying "where dem black girls at"--clearly his thoughts makes more sense because, seriously, who mentions bloggers?? (Surprisingly, you're right though, bloggers do get credit in a Rihanna song!)

12. (From @Jesslaw) You find yourself judging people based on their spelling and grammar.

13. (From @cdavis620) You can’t watch a talk show without thinking about the work that went into getting the product on the show.

14. (From @kwats) You go to the store and buy products because you “love the company’s visual identity”.

I hope you had a great winter break and are enjoying your first week back at school. We have a lot of great things planned for this semester and can't wait to get started! We are currently working on securing a date and location for our first meeting. Please check our Facebook fan page and our blog regularly for more up-to-date information!

As many of you know, Matt and I had the opportunity to travel to San Diego in November for the PRSSA National Conference. We learned so much about PR and our future profession. There is an opportunity for us to attend another conference in Atlanta February 19. We want to extend this opportunity to our members!

PR Real World is a conference hosted by the Georgia PRSA chapter and includes several career development sessions, a career fair and endless networking opportunites with fellow students and professionals.

Registration is $60 and includes lunch on the day of the conference. This is not a school-sponsored event so we will be responsible for our own transportation, food and lodging. However, we are planning on carpooling and rooming together to save money.

Financially, you would be responsible for paying your own registration fee ($60), food, your portion of the lodging (divided evenly among roommates) and gas expenses (again, divided evenly). Once I have a better idea of how many students are going, I can give you a better estimate of how much the trip would cost.

We would leave Thursday, February 18 and depending on the schedules of those attending, either come home Saturday or Sunday.

I would love to have a group from our chapter attend this conference in Atlanta and represent UNF. Please let me know as soon as possible if you'd be interested in attending.

14 Key Skills & Attributes For New PR Professionals

Public relations has changed significantly over the last few years. Even if you don’t buy into the idea that online communities and relationships are part of the public relations function, it’s hard to deny the rising importance of blogs, the gradual decline of traditional media and the impact that online conversations can have on brands. If you do believe that public relations should include these new activities, then there’s a whole new board game to be played.
Along the same lines, the skills that new PR grads need have evolved too.
Here are my thoughts on 14 skills and attributes a new PR professional needs in today’s market.
Traditional Skills/Attributes
Yes, there’s a new game to play (in my opinion), but the old game is still there too. PR pros still need the basic attributes and skills that they’ve always needed. Try launching something using social media alone and you’ll appreciate the gap that traditional media can leave if it’s lacking. So, entry-level PR professionals still need to be proficient at (among other things):
Writing – the cornerstone of a PR professional’s career. If you’re not confident about your writing skills, brush up. You’ll need them. Learn how to write a news release – study those produced by other organizations and practice for yourself.
Communications skills – I’m talking ’small c’ communications here rather than the ‘big c.’ Learn to communicate more effectively with other people
Attention to detail – because nothing will drive your colleagues (and, if you’re unlucky enough for your work to make it there, your clients) mad like poorly-edited work. Proofread everything. Fact check everything. Hand things to your supervisor when you would be happy with them going to the client.
Media relations – you’ll probably be doing media relations throughout the majority of your career. You may not have had an opportunity to do it for yourself as a new graduate, but an understanding of the basics is certainly an advantage – what’s in a media list? What are the pitching best practices?
Proactiveness – if you don’t know an answer to a question, first try to research the answer. If you can’t find the answer, ask. Whatever you do, don’t just sit there until you approach the deadline for your work.
Work ethic – public relations isn’t a 9-to-5 job. It shouldn’t take over your life, but the nature of the work is that sometimes you’ll have last-minute deadlines and sometimes you’ll have to chip-in to help others. There’s nothing worse for more senior team members than watching the more junior ones walk out of the door at 5pm then having to stay there until 9pm themselves. Put in that little bit of extra effort. It won’t be every day, but people will notice.
New Skills/Attributes
Alongside the regular attributes that I think new PR pros should have, I would add a whole new list of attributes related to the online work. Among these I would include:
Blogging - you don’t necessarily need to have one (although it’s a big plus), but an understanding of the importance of blogs and an interest in their use, is essential in my view.
Microblogging - it’s still an emerging technology, but I would argue that an understanding of microblogging tools (the primary one currently being Twitter) is essential for new grads.
Social networking tools – Facebook, MySpace LinkedIn, Plaxo and more – there’s a plethora of social networking tools out there. An understanding of the leading social networks is desirable.
SEO - some parts of search engine optimization are quite technical, but others are very simple and require little technical knowledge. An understanding of the basics is highly valuable. This leads to my next point…
Coding - basic HTML, PHP, VBScript and so on are not critical skills, but I find them useful on a daily basis.
RSS, RSS Readers – I consider an understanding of RSS to be central to people doing any work in social media. For one thing, RSS turns monitoring multiple searches and sites every day into a manageable task. For another, it helps when providing recommendations to clients.
Blogger relations – understand the nuances of blogger relations.
Social media ethics – everyone has their own lines when it comes to ethics. Know where yours lie and how you feel about topics like astroturfing, ghost blogging, sock puppets and other common ethical issues (I’ve given my on astroturfing and ghost blogging several times recently).
It’s hard to find someone with all of these attributes. If you’re honest with yourself, you’re probably stronger in some of these areas than others. Figure out which areas are your weakest, and work on them.
I’ve probably missed a whole bunch of attributes here. PR pros, new and old – what would you add?

It is interesting to see the disconnect between generations when concerning social media. The new craze has perplexed many practitioners leaving room for a new generation to come in and teach. This is an opportunity for us soon to be graduates and many organizations are even hiring young professionals to specifically blog, tweet, facebook, etc. The point is, if you are an undergrad you are more than likely naturally programmed to use social media. If not, I suggest you get on the ball and start learning how to use these sites.

From video press releases and microblogs to phone pitching and (yikes!) paper press kits, mixing traditional and social media tools to achieve communication objectives is a little like playing with a chemistry set: will your mixture fizzle, explode, or (worse yet) do nothing? What are your best-quality ingredients for an effective, comprehensive strategic plan?

As the Director of Partnership Development for HGTV, Gary McCormick is responsible for identifying opportunities for off channel exposure for leading home and lifestyle cable network and its on-air talent – investigating, defining and implementing the partnerships that will increase ratings and awareness with viewers.

Before moving to HGTV, McCormick served as the Director of Public Relations for DIY Network and Fine Living TV Network, where he directed the networks’ media relations and special events, including DIY’s national partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

Active in the Public Relations Society of America since 1985, he currently serves as the Chair-Elect for the 22,000 member professional association and will become Chair and CEO of PRSA in 2010.

McCormick also serves on the board of directors for Plank Center for Public Relations Leadership at the University of Alabama, served as the president of the PRSA Foundation in 2006 and 2007, and has been a co-chair of the Champions for PRSSA since 2005. He has been recognized for his contributions to public relations education as the 2006 Honoree of the Educators Academy David Ferguson Award.
